The New York Center for
Autism Charter School is a groundbreaking lab school
dedicated to defining best practices for the public school
education of children with autism and other pervasive
developmental disorders. Opened in 2005, it is New York
State’s first public charter school dedicated exclusively
to educating children with Autism.
Autism is a complex,
lifelong neurological disorder. An intensive
individualized education program is one of the few
treatments proven to make a meaningful difference in
alleviating the symptoms of autism.
In addition to
utilizing intensive, state-of-the art educational
methodologies in the education of their students in the
all-important areas of social skills, communication and
life skills – areas that are incredibly challenging for
people with autism, NYCA charter School strives to offer
its students the same kind of well-rounded education that
typically developing children receive in school. This
includes field trips, music instruction, sports and
varying enrichment programs such as theater and chess.
In order to maintain the inclusion of the aforementioned
enrichment programs, it is critical that they raise funds
above and beyond that which is provided by the city and
State for their instructional program. The funds raised
through the Zumbathon will help fix this funding gap.
